The university began in 1954 with Chongqing City Middle School Teachers 'Spare-time Training School, renamed Chongqing Teachers' Training College in 1973, merged into Chongqing Education College in 1984, and rebuilt into Chongqing University of Education in 2012. There are 12 secondary colleges with 39 undergraduate majors, involving pedagogy, literature, science, engineering, management, economics, art, medicine and other disciplines.
