The school consists of Science City Campus and Tongliang Campus, covering an area of over 2200 mu. The total construction area of school buildings built and under construction exceeds 730,000 square meters in total. The total value of teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment is nearly RMB 550 million. There are nearly 1700 teaching and administrative staff, including 620 personnel with senior titles and 620 with doctor's degree. There are more than 22,000 full-time students, including more than 2,000 graduate students.

The school focuses on engineering, with coordinated development of engineering, science, management, economics, law, literature and arts. It has outstanding advantages in such disciplines as oil and gas exploration and green development, low-carbon metallurgy and advanced materials, and has distinctive school-running characteristics. It has 12 provincial and ministerial key disciplines and characteristic discipline speciality groups. There are 1 collaborative innovation center for domestic waste recycling treatment co-constructed by provincial and ministry departments, 2 collaborative innovation centers in Chongqing, 8 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, 3 key laboratories of universities in Chongqing and 2 high-level scientific research innovation platforms in Chongqing. Since 2014, it has undertaken more than 170 national projects such as national key R&D plans, national major special projects, National Natural Science Foundation of China and National Social Science Fund of China, and has been granted more than 1,200 patents. The "R&D and Application of Ultra-deepwater Semi-submersible Drilling Platform 'HAI YANG SHI YOU 981'" in which it participated won the special prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, the "Key Technology and Application of Mechanical Grate Domestic Waste Incineration Power Generation" led by the Ministry of Education received the Innovation Achievement Award of China Industry-University-Research Cooperation, and the "Key Technology and Equipment for Green and Efficient Collaborative Smelting of Low-grade Lead-based Multi-metal Resources" led by it won the Second Prize of the Outstanding Achievement Award (Science and Technology) in Scientific Research in Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education. In the past five years, it has won more than 130 scientific research awards from provincial and ministerial governments and industry associations (societies) with the scientific research achievements. In the past two years, the number of projects led by the school and the total number of awards have ranked among the top universities in Chongqing.
