Chongqing Releases First White Paper on Energy Storage Technology, Industrial Development
Time:2023-08-22

Chongqing - Southwest China's Chongqing recently released its first white paper on energy storage technology and industrial development.

The White Paper focuses on in-depth research and comprehensive analysis of new energy storage technologies and provides a "1+3+4+N" model for Chongqing's energy storage industry.

The "1+3+4+N" model is explained as "1" carrier, which stands for the Industry Technology Innovation Alliance; "3" platforms, which represent industry-academia integration, technological innovation, and talent cultivation; "4" dimensions, which represent technology, policy, standards, and scenarios; and "N" enterprises to enrich the ecosystem of Chongqing's new energy storage industry.

According to the White Paper, the current status of Chongqing's new energy storage market is characterized by rapid growth. The emerging new energy storage industry has started to take shape, with the involvement of 22 companies across the upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors, along with multiple operational enterprises.

Solid-state battery becomes a new challenge in energy storage

Energy storage is a crucial underpinning technology in realizing the goals of China's dual-carbon strategy. The burgeoning field of new energy storage holds immense potential to elevate power system stability, evolving into a trillion-level industry of the future.

"The primary avenues of the new energy revolution lie in hydrogen energy and green hydrogen storage, energy storage and battery energy storage, intelligence and intelligent energy storage," said Ouyang Minggao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. "For instance, intelligent energy systems based on vehicle-grid interaction."

Ouyang explained that the battery field has evolved from focusing on power and safety to digitization and intelligence and now to the current transformation of material systems. The focal points and challenges in batteries are solid-state battery technology, with all-solid-state lithium power and energy batteries being key research areas.

Currently, China's solid-state battery sector faces challenges such as the low lithium-ion conductivity of solid electrolytes, poor solid/solid interface contacts and stability, and the rechargeability issues of metallic lithium. These problems impact solid-state batteries' overall performance and reliability, necessitating continuous fundamental research and technological innovation.

Despite solid-state batteries globally in the research and development stage, China's solid-state battery industry is expected to gain momentum as technology advances, potentially leading to large-scale commercial applications. By 2030, the solid-state battery market in China is projected to reach a market size of 20 billion yuan (about USD 2.746 billion).

Supply daily power consumption of 70,000 households

This July, the Western (Chongqing) Science City Intelligent Energy Storage Technology Demonstration Project, including the Gubao Hong 100 MW/200 MWh energy storage station, was officially connected to the grid.

This marked the first networked operation of a one-hundred-megawatt-level grid-side independent energy storage station in the southwestern region.

This facility, capable of discharging up to 400 MWh (400,000 kWh) daily, serves as an energy storage station meeting the daily power consumption requirements of approximately 70,000 households.

Since 2022, the Western (Chongqing) Science City, leveraging platforms such as Science Valley Smart Innovation Park, has strategically laid the groundwork for green industries, robustly advanced the digital economy, and propelled corporate intelligent transformation.

Next, the science city is expediting the nurturing and expansion of future industries, including new energy and novel energy storage, promoting the development of green and low-carbon industries, and empowering the high-quality development of Chongqing's new energy industry.
