Industrial Economy in Chongqing Recovers with Intelligent Manufacturing Fostering Upgrade in Quality
Time:2021-08-08

Walking into the smart factory of Ceres Chongqing, you will be amazed by the Industry 4.0 standard of manufacturing: thousands of robots jointly working on the line, 100% automated critical processes, product testing with high precision... Powered by "Intelligent Manufacturing"(IM), a new car can come off the line within a few minutes. The head of the company said that since its launch in April, the new model jointly created by Ceres and Huawei has been highly popular in the market and has been in short supply. The factory is now working in full force to meet the demand.

The booming production and sales of Ceres is a perfect example of the industrial economic growth in Chongqing.

Since this year, Chongqing enterprises continue to step up their innovation and research. Driven by ‘Intelligent Manufacturing’, the quality of production has been upgraded with more products entering the high-end market. The industrial economy maintains a high growth rate. Recent data from Chongqing Municipal Bureau of Statistics shows that the added value of Chongqing's regulated industries grew 19% year-on-year in the first half of the year, indicating a steady recovery of the industrial economy.

“As the pillar of Chongqing's industry, the auto industry has gradually emerged from the lower point of its development.” Said a representative of Chongqing Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization. Even though it is an important national production center of automobiles, Chongqing had once suffered from slow economic growth due to a decline in the auto industry caused by the low-end product structure in general. Learned from the pain, Chongqing introduced the industry chain and innovation chain resources to help car companies launch high-end intelligent car series and push the automobile industry to the high-end market, facilitating the recovery of the industry.

Since this year, the transformation of Chongqing's auto industry has yielded prominent results. As Chongqing's leading car company, Chang'an Auto has sold more than 1.2 million vehicles in the first half of the year, an increase of 44.5% year-on-year; the sales of the independent segment led the independent brand car companies and that of new energy vehicles increased more than three times. Led by Chang’an Automobile, Chongqing automotive industry output value in the first half of the year increased by 25.3%.

“The reason behind the significant growth is the low starting point due to the pandemic in the same period last year, but more so the technology accumulation and design dividends.” Says Zhu Huarong, chairman of Chang’an Mobile. Over the years, 5% of the company’s sales revenue has been invested solely in technological R&D, with many popular smart internet-connected vehicles supporting the increase of sales.

With the focus shifting to the Intelligent Manufacturing and new energy fields, Chongqing has also promoted the power switching mode and the effort to become a demonstration city of hydrogen fuel cell motor vehicles, developing the automobile industry with ‘scene building’ as a driver.

As another pillar of Chongqing's industrial economy, the electronic information industry, thanks to the increase of orders, more output of high added value products, and other favorable factors, has seen the first half of its added value increased by 33% year-on-year.

Chongqing E-ong Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd. is specialized in producing OLED control panels. Thanks to the effort put into research and development, the monopoly of foreign companies in this field has been smashed for a long time, and the development of the company has started to take up. Xu Jianwei, deputy general manager of the company, said that the expanding market of domestic high-end panels has resulted in the company's prosperous business, with the first half of revenue doubled year-on-year.

Based on "Intelligent Manufacturing", Chongqing has also been promoting the use of technologies like 5G and big data to empower traditional industries, with 55,000 industrial enterprises getting access to the cloud and the platform in recent years, effectively helping to reduce costs and increase efficiency. To make up for a lack of innovation, Chongqing has deployed the innovation chain around the industrial chain, with 25% of industrial enterprises now has their own R&D institutions. The number will be raised to 50% at the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan.

R&D is not the only sector Chongqing is focusing on, the same goes for industrial chains. Recently, with many projects including the Kirin Software (Chongqing) project and Huawei (Chongqing) Industrial Software Innovation Center signed to settle in Chongqing, Chongqing has sounded the “horn” of industrial software development. “The industrial software is considered ‘the crown’ in the industry sector of Chongqing. With a huge variety of industry sectors and the fast digital transformation, Chongqing has an edge in developing the industrial software sector, which allows us to make plans in advance for future development.” Said a representative from the Software Department of Chongqing Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization.

Likewise, this year, many strategic emerging industry projects in Chongqing have been laid out or put into operation, effectively driving Chongqing's industrial economy to upgrade. Data shows that in the first half of the year, Chongqing's high-tech manufacturing and strategic emerging manufacturing value added grew by 31.9% and 30.1%, respectively. The structure of Chongqing's industrial economy has been effectively improved.

“With an increasing effort put into R&D empowered by digital transformation, industries in Chongqing are stepping up in terms of quality, and new industries are mushrooming, advancing the recovery of Chongqing’s industrial economy. We are getting closer to an era of ‘Intelligent Manufacturing’.” Said a representative from the Software Department of Chongqing Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization.
