How Does 5G Network Empower the 2019 Smart China Expo?

Chongqing – 5G phone, autonomous driving, remote driving, VR games, AI robot, Yangtze river cableway 5G+VR experience, urban management based on big data…visitors can experience these fantastic smart technologies powered by 5G at the upcoming Smart China Expo from August 26 to 29.

China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Tower have built over 200 5G base stations in the main venue of Smart China Expo to support the operation of a huge amount of 5G applied technologies. Alongside the main venue at the Chongqing International Expo Center, during the Expo, visitors can also experience 5G applications in Xiantao Big Data Valley Experience Center, Intelligent Valley in Nan’an District,Jiefangbei  5G Experience Hall,  Yangtze river cableway 5G experience booth.

Fast is people’s general impression on 5G. At the experience booth in Chongqing International Expo Center, 2 phones, one with 5G and the other one with 4G, were downloading the same 2GB-size game app. It took only 30 seconds for the 5G phone to finish the downloading. When the 5G one completed, the 4G one only downloaded about one-fifth of it. 5G has low latency. While playing games on the 5G phone, the latency of games was stably at 40-50 milliseconds; On 4G one, the latency of the same game was between 70 to 100 milliseconds. The stability of 5G made no slowdown while the users were pulling forward or backward the video. Under the 5G network, 16 videos with 14K definition were able to display on the screen at the same time. During the Smart China Expo, mobile network operators will provide a big number of 5G phones for visitors to experience. The operators will also transform the 5G network into Wifi signal to have visitors with the normal 4G phones experience the 5G.

On the 5G mobile experience vehicle run by China Mobile, there displayed plenty of interesting smart technologies powered by 5G. The smart museum project enabled a simple picture on the wall to tell rich stories behind it. Use the handheld AR explorer to scan the imperfect Buddha sculpture on the screen, and soon a full Buddha image appeared on the AR explorer in the hand, with sound and more vivid screen effect. Rich content about the Buddha on the screen had been stored in the cloud, and all were accessible by the AR explorer. Some technologies such as holographic projection, remote signature instrument, 360 degrees VR experience of Jiefangbei CBD may not sound new, but upgraded by 5G network, all these technologies will definitely bring the visitors the experience of far better quality.

At the Jiefangbei 5G Experience Hall, there was a long queue in front of the claw machine. The Experiencer did not need to use any rocker or button to control the robotic arm to catch the dolls. The robotic arm would be able to gather information about the participants’ hand movements, and then synchronize it with 5G networks to reconstruct the movements. Namely, the robotic arm can automatically follow each movement of the experiencer’s arm to catch the doll. Such synchronization may seem simple, but it requires a very high network transmission rate. 5G makes the synchronization a reality. The technology can make a considerable contribution to the field of remote medical treatment.

Yangtze River Cableway is a popular tourist destination in Chongqing. At the Yangtze river cableway 5G experience booth, visitors put on the AR glass to start the 3 minutes’ real-time trip across the Yangtze River by cableway. A VR camera is placed on the cableway coach, the panoramic images captured by the VR camera are projected into the VR glasses through 5G network. The real-time 360 degrees panoramic video transmission is huge and 5G makes the process smooth.

The 5G+VR experience technology also applies to a number of popular scenic spots in Chongqing. At the Smart China Expo, visitors could take a VR trip around Chongqing. Although they cannot be there in person, with the assistance of the 5G+VR, what they see and hear will be exactly the same as they physically are there.

5G makes the remote driving possible. At the Xiantao Big Data Valley Experience Center, the remote driving was carried out. Drivers sit in the remote driving cockpit to control the car that was over 20 kilometers away. The big screen in front showed 360 degrees real-time visual image about the vehicle driving conditions and the road conditions at the place where the controlled car was. The remotely controlled car could always synchronize with the operation from the remote driving cockpit. The remote driving involves technologies including network technology, video technology, control technology, artificial intelligence technology and makes full use of 5G network features such as low latency and high reliability to carry out real-time control of distant vehicles. During remote driving, the entire latency was less than 20 milliseconds, which is much lower than human neural response time.

Autonomous driving is a hot topic globally. Powered by 5G, autonomous driving has made a big step forward. During the Smart China Expo, at the Intelligent Valley in Nan’an District, visitors can experience the 5G autonomous vehicles. The autonomous vehicle is similar to the sightseeing car in parks and scenic spots, which can carry 7 people. Supported by the 5G network, the car is equipped with the autonomous driving system, sensors, and edge cloud computing to achieve autonomous driving. The autonomous vehicle was programmed ahead of time and can be driven on the planned route.

The autonomous cleaning vehicle is equipped with laser radar, camera, ultrasonic radar, and other sensors to achieve automatic operation. The backstage monitoring is based on the real-time data transmitted back through 5G network. The cleaning vehicle has AI and intelligent learning functions. In daily work, it can collect and analyze its operational data, gradually figure out the best cleaning route and scheme, and optimize its cleaning work.
