The 5G-Based Autopilot Base Project for Demonstrative Operation on the Open Road is a joint effort of the China Automotive Engineering Research Institute Co., Ltd., Xiantao International Big Data Valley, China Telecom and DT mobile. The project, operating in Southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality represents China’s first 5G-based L4-class autonomous driving, and also the country’s first 5G driver-less public service platform. The project marks a significant breakthrough in Chongqing’s 5G commercial use and application in the autonomous driving industry.

Currently, there are three Chang’ an Level 4 autonomous vehicles operating for the project. An operator held the wheel in the exhibition area of Xiantao International Big Data Valley and controlled a car remotely outside. Due to the advantages of 5G technology, the remote control has a low-delay within 20 milliseconds.

Compared with last year’s performance, this year’s Chang’ an Auto L4 self-driving car has improved the sensing range and accuracy, the computing platform’s computing power, and high-performance decision-making planning control. It meets the L4-class automatic driving of open roads and is more comfortable to ride. At present, the vehicle adopts six laser radar, 5-millimeter-wave radar, six cameras, and 12 ultrasonic radar sensing configurations.

Robo Taxi (autonomous driving taxi) service and bus operation service can be provided to realize real-time line driving, parking collision avoidance, signal light V2X interconnection and control, follow-up driving, outdoor automatic parking, public transportation flow Change lanes, public traffic flow static obstacles, public traffic flow intersection turns, meeting cars, driving through bus stops, overpasses, and central and auxiliary roads.

The 2019 Smart China Expo will take place from August 26-29 at the International Exhibition Center, and will boast an exhibition area of more than 150.000 m2. Visitors will enjoy free entrance and will be able to enjoy technology focused around the central topic of “Smart Technology: Empowering Economy, Enriching Life.”
